The College of Veterinary Medicine Wellbeing Program Director provides leadership for the development and implementation of overarching policies, programs and initiatives that support and nurture the wellbeing, engagement and development of our CVM community including, students, faculty, staff, and interns and residents.

As a college resource within the Office of the Dean, the CVM Wellbeing Program Director will facilitate awareness of and access to resources in the broader Cornell community and develop new initiatives and coordinate programs that enhance existing centralized services both at the college and university level, and identify potential synergies and opportunities to increase impact. Taking a proactive, preventative approach, the CVM Wellbeing Program Director will work with the College Wellbeing Committee to coordinate wellbeing activities across the college and promote awareness of these opportunities.

The CVM Wellbeing Program Director will support student wellbeing and resilience through coordinated curricular and co-curricular programming. The CVM Wellbeing Program Director will also work in close collaboration with program leadership for the veterinary, master of public health, and graduate programs to contribute to the design and delivery of the college’s wellbeing curricula and co-curricular programs. Wellbeing content and instructional modes are expected to be evidence-based and adapted where appropriate to the career pathways of our students. Wellbeing instruction should emphasize preventive measures and the acquisition of life-long skills that will support long and productive professional careers for our graduates.
In alignment with university initiatives and strategic direction of the college and university offices, the CVM Wellbeing Program Director will partner closely student facing unit leadership, Office of Human Resources and university leaders to implement a comprehensive educational and support program that promotes a supportive culture of self-care.  They will be expected to collaborate on program development initiatives with Cornell Health, central Human Resources, and other college and university subject matter experts in key areas of wellbeing to deliver appropriate programming.

To equip students, faculty and staff with the skills needed to develop personal and professional resilience, the CVM Wellness Director will work with college leadership and the CUHA Wellbeing Counselor to develop a wellness curriculum that will allow students and interns and residents to acquire the knowledge and practice the skills necessary for wellbeing and resilience as they progress through their academic training and into their professional careers. Furthermore, the Director will advise and direct staff and faculty to appropriate resources when needed and work to foster a community of inclusion and acceptance.

Wellbeing program topics might include:
•    Strategies that promote wellbeing (e.g., mindfulness, gratitude, perspective changing abilities, cognitive restructuring, fostering optimistic behavior, maintaining motivation, self-compassion)
•    Strategies to promote health and reduce fatigue (exercise, nutrition, sleep hygiene, time management, achieving life balance)
•    Positive psychology approaches (e.g., self-awareness, self-regulation, mental agility)
•    Identifying signs of burnout and prevention and recovery strategies
•    Adaptive and maladaptive approaches to coping with stress and compassion fatigue; strategies to reduce stress
•    Perfectionism and impostor syndrome

The CVM Wellbeing Program Director will develop and implement programs that complement the professional development, career advising, financial planning and other programming offered through DVM and other student service offices including, MPH, and graduate education programs, to conduct training through presentations and hands-on workshops to inform and facilitate implementation of wellbeing and resiliency principles into courses offered at the college.

The CVM Wellbeing Program Director will spearhead efforts to identify specific personal and organizational characteristics that can help members of the college community thrive, particularly in the classroom and the clinical environments. They will work with college leadership to implement interventions and reinforce a culture of wellbeing.

Required Qualifications:

•    Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling Psychology, Human Services, Marriage & Family Therapy, or related field with 5-7 years of related experience, and/or a combination of education and experience
•    Experience in program planning, coordination and management
•    Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and discovery in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
•    Effective presentation and interpersonal skills
•    Demonstrated ability to identify desired outcomes and develop and implement programs to achieve them
•    Strong commitment to collaborative work and successful team player
•    Demonstrated ability to take initiative and develop innovative solutions to problems
•    Ability to anticipate and adapt to changing priorities and additional demands
•    Demonstrated flexibility, openness and receptivity to new information, ideas and approaches
•    Outstanding written and oral communication skills
•    Exercises appropriate judgment, tact and diplomacy in highly sensitive situations
•    Flexible in adjusting to a changing work environment, job responsibilities, and departmental priorities
•    Willingness to deliver periodic or occasional programming after hours or on weekends to meet the specific needs of members of the college community
•    Knowledge of trends in mental health in academia and participation in continuing education and reporting at appropriate national meetings
•    Ability protect and safeguard sensitive or confidential information

Preferred Qualifications:

•    Master’s level degree, PHD, PsyD or DVM/VMD degree preferred
•    Experience in health-related higher education desirable
•    Demonstrated experience in health promotion in large hospital, medical/veterinary college or university setting
•    Training and experience as a mental health clinician
